King and Queen Bench Press Results

Updated on 06/10/2022

Hoke Football/Weight Lifting held the first King and Queen Bench Press Championships on 5/6/17 in the McDonald Gym at Hoke County High School.  The participants were from the local areas of Hoke, Cumberland, Robeson, and Richmond Counties.  All participants were Kings (Males)

In the High School division there were only two schools being represented in  Jack Britt High School and the host school Hoke County.

Hoke Falls to Pinecrest

Updated on 06/10/2022

Hoke took the opening kick off and scored on its first possession to take a 6-0 lead as the PAT attempt was blocked by Pinecrest.  The Bucks defense then put pressure on the Patriots QB who threw an interception that was run back by the Bucks to take a 12-0 lead as the 2 point conversion failed.

That was all the scoring that the Bucks would get on the night.  The Patriots scored twice in the second quarter to take a 14-12 halftime lead.  The third quarter was scoreless and the Patriots added another TD late to finish the night's scoring to 21-12.

Hoke travels to Lumberton this Friday.

Bucks "Return" to the Win Column

Updated on 06/10/2022

After a hard fought game looked like it was slipping away from the Bucks...

The score was 14-12 late in the 4th quarter with Swett driving and consuming the clock.  The Bucks' defense made another good stand to prevent the Ram's from getting into the end zone forcing the visiting team to try a field goal and going up 5 points with less than 2 minutes remaining in the game.  The kick was good, score Purnell 17, Hoke 12 with 1:39 left on the clock and in the game.

The ensuing kick-off was returned by the Bucks for the TD and a 18-17 lead.  The Bucks go for 2 and a three point lead with less than 1:27 left in the game.  Bucks 20, Rams 17.

Swett takes the ball from their end of the field and with the help of some penalties by the Bucks get within field goal range for their kicker.  As time runs down the Rams kick is short and wide right.

Bucks Win 20-17 and are tied for third as Pinecrest lost to Richmond.  1-2 in the conference and 2-7 overall.

Next up is Pinecrest.

Defending 3A State Champs Defeat Bucks

Updated on 06/10/2022

The Bucks lost 38-7 to the Gryphons of Rocky Mount, defending State 3A Champions.  The first half was ended with a 16-0 score and the Bucks very much still in the game.  The Bucks' lone score came in the 4th quarter with a double pass ending with Andre Pegues throwing to Tyler Crowder for the long ball and TD.

Bucks', Jorgensen Get First Win of the Season

Updated on 06/10/2022

Making big plays on one side of the ball just wasn’t enough for Hoke County senior Quinn Maynor in the Bucks’ 25-18 win over visiting E.E. Smith on Friday.

Maynor, a starting safety, was plugged in at quarterback on the Bucks’ opening series of the fourth quarter. He took over for starter K.J. Thorpe, who had started the game despite nursing an ankle injury earlier in the week.

“We tend to die down sometimes when it comes to big play situations or when a big play happens on us,” Maynor said. “I tried to keep everybody up and keep the intensity up.”

On what turned out to be the game-winning series, Maynor carried the ball on four rushes and threw the scoring pass to Andre Pegues to put the Bucks (1-4) ahead 25-18 with less than nine minutes left to play.

But he didn’t stop there.

Back out on defense on the Golden Bulls’ next drive, Maynor picked off a pass by Xeaiver Bullock on a first-and-10 situation from the Hoke 25-yard line.

Maynor’s performance was a key part of the Bucks’ first win of the season, ending a four-game losing streak marked by some close losses.

“I told the kids that this was coming,” first-year Bucks’ coach David Jorgensen said. “Not turning the ball over was the biggest thing. We limited our mistakes. We still made some, but less than we have been.”

The Bulls (2-3) would get the ball back, taking over on their own 1 after making a goal-line stop to keep hope of a last-minute scoring drive alive.

But the Bulls made it only as far as the Hoke 49-yard line before time expired.

“We don’t want our team to think it’s over until there are triple zeros on the clock,” Jorgensen said. “We knew E.E. Smith had to drive 99 yards, and I knew we’d be tough to do that against. But when their last ball was incomplete, I can’t describe how awesome it felt.”

The teams had battled back and forth since the start of the game. Hoke struck first, scoring on their first possession.

Thorpe connected with Andre Pegues on a 15-yard pass that the receiver caught at the Bulls’ 5-yard line, where he fumbled the ball in the hands of teammate Tyler Crowder, who ran the ball the remaining 5 yards for the touchdown.

Thorpe, who sat only the one series when Maynor played at quarterback, finished with 99 yards in the air, completing five of 11 attempts and throwing one interception.

Peruse was the Bucks’ top target, catching three passes for 80 yards.

The Bulls answered that opening score, going 72 yards on 13 plays. Bullock connected with Zaire McIntyre on a 13-yard pass to finish the drive.

Bullock completed seven of 17 attempts, throwing for 162 yards and two touchdowns with one pick.

The Bucks scored twice more in the first half to take an 18-12 lead into halftime. Deazwun Campbell scored on a 31-yard rush, and Thorpe and Pegues met up again for the touchdowns.

First-year Bulls’ head coach Deron Donald said the team’s play was marred by poor execution despite a strong effort from his players.

“We just didn’t execute,” Donald said. “Defensively, we couldn’t get off the field on third downs. Overall, I know my kids played hard, but we’ve got to do a better job and figure out ways to finish ballgames.”

The Bulls’ defense had a pair of big plays late.

The team tied the game on a big defensive play from Rayshawn Blake, who picked off Thorpe inside Bulls’ territory and returned the ball 70 yards to tie the score at 18 with 1:31 left in the third quarter.

The Bulls’ defense stopped the Bucks from capitalizing on Maynor’s interception with a goal-line stand that forced a turnover on downs at the Bull 1.

The Bulls moved 50 yards, but a final Hail Mary attempt fell incomplete.

Bucs Win After Time Expires

Updated on 06/10/2022

Britt came from behind to take a 13-12 lead at the half.

Hoke was up 20-13 with 1:28 left in the game.

With less than a second showing on the clock, Britt at the 6 yard line, they run it in as time expires to score and make it 20-19 Hoke.

The Bucs decide to go for two and the victory.  This is an un-timed down and they are allowed to attempt an extra point even if the time has go to zero.  Britt runs a play that looks very much like the same play they just scored from the 6 and convert, snatching the victory from Coach Jorgensen's Bucks, 21-20.
